Hi, I'm Alen.

I build enterprise voice search experiences at Expect Labs. Previously, I worked on the large-scale data processing and statistical analysis which powers the experimentation framework at Twitter, and on building client solutions based on machine learning and natural language processing in the Watson Group at IBM.

I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 2014 with my M.S. in Intelligent Information Systems. I completed my degree in the Language Technologies Institute under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Nyberg. I spent my undergraduate years at Rice University, and completed my B.S. in Computer Science in 2013 with the guidance of Dr. Devika Subramanian. I also worked in the Bioinformatics Group as a research assistant under Dr. Luay Nakhleh. My professional and academic interests include artificial intelligence, personalization systems, and statistical genomics.

I was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and speak fluent Serbo-Croatian. I've lived in three countries and moved a total of 12 times, and am happy to call San Francisco my current home. Fitness is extremely important to me, and I focus on strength training and Olympic weightlifting in particular. I'm a huge music geek and obsessively maintain a set of curated Spotify playlists. I also enjoy traveling, science, and beer.
